Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Glasgow MT

.DISCUSSION...
KEY MESSAGES:
- Bitterly cold temperatures continue through this weekend with
wind chills dropping as low as 45 below zero in the far NE
corner of the state. A Cold Weather Advisory and Extreme Cold
Warning remain in effect.
- Temperatures warm to near normal early next week along with
mostly dry conditions.
WEATHER PATTERN OVERVIEW:
An upper trough and arctic surface high pressure system is over
the region. The coldest temperatures will continue to be in the
northeast, with warmer temperatures in the southwest part of the
area. The subzero temperatures will end for most of the area after
Monday morning as the upper trough shifts further east. Until
then, periods of wind chills of 40 below or colder are nearly
certain for far northeast Montana through tomorrow morning.
Northwest winds and a weak disturbance over central Montana
Saturday into Saturday night will allow for scattered snow
showers, mostly when forced upslope. Petroleum, Garfield, and
southwest Phillips County have the best opportunity for snow. Up
to one inch of snow is the most likely scenario for these
locations.
Temperatures will slowly moderate through next week as an upper
ridge begins to affect the area, which will also limit chances for
precipitation.
FORECAST CONFIDENCE & DEVIATIONS:
Increased PoPs for today through early Sunday morning, especially
near central Montana. Increased winds for today as a cold front is
expected to move through.
There is high confidence of the placement of the Cold Weather
Advisories and Extreme Cold Warnings and a warmup on Monday.
There is moderate confidence for accumulating snow showers today
along areas close to central Montana. There is low confidence for
accumulating snow in the southeast part of the area. There is high
confidence in winds for today into tomorrow.
&&
.AVIATION...
PATTERN: The cold arctic airmass will remain over the region
through Monday morning. Mid level clouds will increase overnight,
and low clouds are expected to move in this afternoon. As a cold
front moves through today, there is moderate confidence in snow
showers reducing ceilings down to MVFR from 18Z to 06Z Sunday.
There is low confidence in snow showers bringing IFR conditions
this afternoon into Sunday morning.
FLIGHT CONDITIONS: Even though MVFR to VFR conditions are
expected, cold temperature impacts at all NE MT terminals will may
cause icing problems and equipment failure due to exposure,
especially during the late night through early morning hours.
WINDS: For KGGW, southeast at 6 to 12 knots, becoming north at 8
to 14 knots after 21Z. For all other sights, light and variable
becoming north at 6 to 12 knots after 21Z.
